Jesus CHRIST. Having gone through a very similar ordeal with my nonagenarian mother in law, my outraged sympathies. (In her case, they’d done the urine tests, the results had been in MyChart for days, and none of her dozen doctors managed to draw a line from A to B where B was a kidney infection)

My 80 year old mum is having some weird health issues currently also, the docs haven't helped so far but she's got an appointment tomorrow. I'm miles away though and cant just pop around to help.

I did not know there were weird UTI symptoms in elderly patients. Thanks for the info!

For fuck's sake. I'm sorry. Hopefully they'll figure it out soon. (And if it's a UTI you should punch a doctor.)

When I was a teenager, a close friend's elderly father was incredibly unwell. He was delirious, refusing food, and wetting himself. I suggested testing his blood glucose. It was in the high teens. None of his doctors had thought to do this.

Wait, what? Even I know the first thing you check for in an elderly person is a UTI. *pinches bridge of nose*

I am not a doctor and I know UTI symptoms in elderly women are very weird and random and include things like falls, weakness, and dizziness, without the classic symptoms. Mum has been prone to UTIs her whole life. She lost a kidney to one. What the actual fuck.

Wtf. That's like the most basic of things.

My parents get annoyed with me for being "overly controlling" about their GP appointments and tests. But this is why I am so attentive to the results and trying to get them help. People miss things through incompetence or miscommunication. Doctors are not infallible and they are underfunded.

UTIs used to be mistaken for dementia because they can also cause hallucinations. It happened to my mom. It should be a standard thing to check.
