Did a thread on this. Pure pisstake but it boiled down to simply not liking film as an art form. Particularly Nolan’s way if film making. Which is fine. Different strokes. But it is weird for her to be booking film review gigs.

film criticism matters more than source material knowledge sometimes

I don't really disagree with her general take. The Odyssey has awesome moments but it's a bit of a slog. But her review, even more than the film, is both rather incoherent and definitely too long.

The idea that there is such a thing as "domain knowledge" is more controversial than it should be.

She has some interesting points! But then when she tries to do critique of the film itself she seems to go off the rails

Would we still be talking about it if the translator was a man? Like fine, people didn’t like her review. Who cares?

Getting someone with expertise to write scattershot about something tangentially related is what makes it the perfect Atlantic article.

I had a lot of sympathy for a heartfelt expert whose translation clearly informed the movie but nevertheless seemed to misunderstood that when you make a movie you can magnify or shrink the fictional emphasis on a character or a theme, or even change those things, and still have a great movie!

Which would be blindingly obvious the other way around as well; you wouldn't get Nolan to review a novel on film-making! But classics/literature is viewed as the "superior" artform and therefore it's allowed to comment on the clearly inferior filmmaking
