I’ll skip the thoughtful analysis and will merely opine that Douthat is an insufferable demi-intellectual twerp whose origin story is that he couldn’t get laid back in the day.

Your thread skips one of the best parts — where he says a good-guys/bad-guys framing helps him to write his columns. I would just respond: Isn't the columnist's job to illuminate the world as it is, not force everything in it into reductive little boxes simply to make their work easier?

I read Douthat's columns in the NYT for about a year, maybe 5 years ago. The columns about Catholicism were deeply uninformed, like what you'd expect from a guy who never read Merton or Marcel, or even Kierkegaard, but memorized the Baltimore Catechism. Everything else was dull.

I seldom read him, and I know very little of Jordan Peterson. But in the little I've read and watched of both, they come across as fairly similar. Similar. They're supposed to be far right wing, but often they just are empty and pretentious. Most of this article is philosopher-king fluff.

I know this is unkind, but I believe that most of Douthat’s politics are explained by him experiencing the world while being conventionally unattractive. I think in our extremely visual society, we should leverage the idea that these are the politics of ugly people, and who wants to be ugly?

Anyone who read the column: Did Douthat ever explain in detail who the elites were, what their ideas were, how they failed, and how that failure led to populism? It just sounds like a narrative we're expected to accept whole.
