I’m shocked at how many people I met at the produce section of 3 grocery stores I go to that had no idea about cyclospora. Including the staff working there. Now I understand how many people don’t follow politics and have no idea what’s going on.

So since this got some traction, the grocery store I stopped at today was Mom’s Organic Market. It had the Earthbound brand for packaged greens, which is…Taylor Farms. I told the employee, but she looked confused.

Ответ для Ma Carol

Not MOM’s!!!! That’s my safe store.

Ответ для Ma Carol

When crunchy moms don't even know.. you know it's BAD.

Ответ для Ma Carol

And sometimes workers don't want to stand around and discuss these things, it's not always that we don't know. Conversely, too many customers think we know all the details. When you say employees, are you talking about the produce staff or the cashiers?

One of the reasons: the health secretary totally ignoring it. And NO PSAs. There should be PSA on open channels, streaming, and radio.

Ответ для Ma Carol

I hope you can avoid the stores for the foreseeable future…🤞

Ответ для Ma Carol

Brazil has a lot of PSA, especially reminding the population when to vaccinated for certain viruses.

Ответ для Ma Carol

I've heard more commercials on a Burlington, Vermont FM 📻 station for Pfizer for all dot com (SARS-CoV-2 #CovidIsNotOver infection treatment, "Paxlovid") discussing how SARS2 unexpectedly interrupts summer plans (*NOT* as fall/winter seasonal as influenza 🤣) than I've heard about Cyclospora. 🙄

Ответ для Ma Carol

But that would draw attention to the fact that RFK took this exact parasite off the monitoring list last year. Bad optics. Better to just let thousands have explosive diarrhea and hope it just goes away on its own than to make the party look bad and take responsibility for it.

Ответ для Ma Carol

EXACTLY!👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼 We USED to have health officials who warned doctors and the general public. Not anymore.

Ответ для Mr. Horror4H

Got* give us an edit button.

Apocryphal quotation from a source no one can name: You may have no interest in politics, but politics has an interest in you. The real quotation (Pericles): "We do not say that a man who takes no interest in politics is a man who minds his own business; we say that he has no business here at all."

Ответ для Gino Belgeri

I say the simplified way above people for those who say “I don’t care for politics”, “I’m not into politics”, “I don’t follow politics”. It may come from older generations who liked to repeat: “politics and money should not be discussed”. Typical of workplaces. In fact, many people’s only social

It's supposed to be the job of our government to warn people when there's a health hazard. Everyone in that store should've known. Unfortunately, our government doesn't believe there is one. They also don't believe in science or helping people.

Ответ для DarLee

I posted public service announcements that are very common in Brazil. For everything that matters, particularly vaccination. On TV and the press.

I wish I could just unplug and trust that I won’t die from eating lettuce 😭

We just got a soup & salad bar at work. I've been avoiding the salad portion. No one at work knows about cyclospora. I mentioned I wasn't feeling well. The person I was talking to mentioned that something was going around, lies of throwing up & diarrhea. 1/2

Ответ для jinxleah

I sarcastically said "Huh, wonder what that is?" She said she wondered too, because she's like to know. I said it was most likely cyclospora, then had to explain what that is. Sigh. I'm so tired.

It is exactly why we are where we are.

It's not even politics. It's just news. But since the lame stream media has shown themselves to be useless in politics, it's no wonder folks have given up on them completely.

M

I'm amazed at how many people don't wash their produce. Birds, raccoons, worms, and more poop in farm fields. Wash your hands. Wash your food!!! That isn't politics.

C

They’ll learn quickly if it ever makes them sick.

Ответ для charliesurfs

Oh yeah…and might blame Biden 😆

let them eat salad

Almost like we should have a department or group of people to deal with this so that everyday people don't have to become disease experts to buy a bell pepper.

If cyclospora hits senior care places, & loved ones get incredibly ill for a month needing possible hospitalization, facilities will be blamed. (they can’t test every bit of lettuce) Maybe then, people will notice & care? Feds are waiting for this to attack our seniors w/o mercy. It’s disgusting!😡

Ответ для turtlemom4

Sorry, hospitals are closing & gas is to expensive to transport them! ☠️ ⚰️

it’s scary. i’ve seen this in other contexts too. not paying attention to any news at all

"This Elon fella seems like a nice guy. I'm sure if he ever threw two Sieg Heils, the news would tell me at some point."

The gross ignorance of Americans is alarming/appalling. Our education system has been broken for decades. Books are banned and many people in this country don't blink an eye. It's the systematic take-down of Democracy.

Similar thing happened with staff of two different restaurants I recently patronized. When I asked about their salad greens they had no idea what I was talking about. I couldn’t believe a restaurant wouldn’t know.

Quite a large chunk of the populace is barely online and are just busting ass to put food on the table

It’s so disappointing and frustrating,

It would probably hurt sales of produce, toilet paper, anti diarrhea meds, adult diapers and plungers if grocery stores posted notices about it.

Stupid people get sick from things they can prevent. Watch Pox News - get sick. Listen to Junior Kennedy - get sick. Get all your news from social media - get sick. The rest of us do our damndest to believe science, our doctors & try to protect ourselves without resorting to ivermectin.

I was in a Dollar General with a produce section the other day and they were fully stocked with the poison salad bags, etc. I couldn't believe what I was seeing

Last week I asked the guy stocking the produce if they had any of that diarrhea lettuce. He replied, " I don't know."

If it was trending on TickTock or Instagram, etc they would know about it. 🫩

I watch late night comics to get my news. AND my grocery store produce guy cleared my purchase of Taylor Farms ready salad. "It's in the Midwest. Everything in that bag is grown within 100 miles of here."

I can’t

I saw all the shredded lettuce bagged salads on sale - to sell more of them, and quickly!!!

Yeah, you're a passive aggressive weirdo. Thanks for sharing this so that I can unfollow. Thanks.

Ответ для joey Guagnér

Turns out, I never followed in the first place! Even better! Woot!

Perhaps because their primary information source is Fox News.

Ответ для Logic L1 👊🇺🇸🐸

Could be. But this is a high income, high education part of a blue state.

I go out to restaurants with my friends and they are all ordering salads and these are smart, educated people.

Same here.

Has Taylor farms recalled anything? I haven’t seen any iceberg lettuce recalled I’m so confused…

Ответ для Sydney Kennedy

I have not heard of any recall because Trump said it’s not Taylor Farms and blamed it on Mexico…after the CEO paid him a visit. $$$$$$$

Has Taylor farms recalled anything? I haven’t seen any iceberg lettuce recalled I’m so confused…

Politics takes time and is boring on top of the news you get if you don't dig is incomplete. I find offshore news from non autocratic countries is much more honest than US news served up by billionaires.

Perfect example why many Bluesky elites/pundits who want Ds to focus their political messaging on moral arguments are just dead wrong. Normal folks are not tuned in to much of the daily news/happenings. They are worried about their bank accounts. Affordability. Affordability. Affordability.

Damn it … and these are the people who ignore the importance of getting out to vote .. the ignorance of that neglect is truly astounding 😳😳

Ответ для hooplas2much

I’ll amend the comment to state, if they’re that totally unaware of what’s going on in the news, they most likely don’t give a crap about politics.. probably best they sit out the vote if they’re really that indifferent.. 😐

A few years ago, no one in my office knew that a tropical storm was heading our way. It’s not just political news… they don’t watch the weather either.

Ответ для Full time insect, part time cynic

Actually, the storm monitoring and alert system, those people were fired already. I think that happened a year ago. I honestly don’t know how we get any news about storms unless it’s from European climate monitoring.

Ответ для Full time insect, part time cynic

They don’t! I have a friend who’s totally oblivious when there’s a storm coming and wants to go out.

That's the REAL infection in the US!

They can catch by reading while they sit on the can.

To miss the news about explosive diarrhea seems pretty unfortunate.

M

depending on the state, the risk might be low or not above baseline anyway (*probably*). But still it's national (maybe international) news.

Ответ для misanthropocene

Yes, I’m in NC with family and it’s much different than in Ohio. Here they aren’t too worried. Ohio is salad free

It is shocking and disgusting how many ppl have decided to put blinders on & ignor reality. That they then bitch & moan about how things are going is insane.

It's not even politics, it's health warnings.. Oh yeah our person in charge of health is a recovering heroin addict...so do you listen to addicts?

Knowing about it should not be reliant on people following politics. The US Government should be communicating with its citizens and business owners through official public announcements and recalls.

T

Absolutly true. People don’t want to know what’s happening both socially and politically, not so much because they are busy but due to fear. They’ll tell you they don’t want to know about things they have no power to change or control which is insanity thinking.knowing is a way to protect yourself.

The profound ignorance is frightening. And this is the "well-informed electorate" our founders had in mind? 🙄

I guess when you're concentrated on staying alive and having a place to stay, your perspective becomes rather limited. This is why governments make it difficult for most of the population to succeed.

Right, and folks want those people to be forced to vote? I have met some of my neighbors; I do not want the ignorant as fuck anywhere near a voting booth.

Ответ для T Antony 🏳‍🌈

I wish they didn’t. But they showed up for Trump big time in 2024…and here we are.

Or they do n think it's nothing more than mild food poisoning. Yeah. And covid is just mild flu 🙄

"I don't get political" means "I don't like my information challenged by real facts." People who don't follow the news are the reason we cannot move to a decent election system; they are so uninformed you can't even have a discussion about real events.

They’re still selling Taylor Farms bagged salads at my local grocery store. Seriously??? 🤢

Never mind politics. They don't pay attention to any news at all. I suppose that benefits their mental health short term, but long term it is bad news for them, and for the rest of us, too.

Ditto. I was like why are you even putting that in your cart?

It's depressing. That's why our democracy is falling apart. We've become a flaccid, self-centered, apathetic nation.

Google searches spiked on election day for "did biden drop out." I seriously do not understand being that checked out but still going to vote.

My neighbor, a nurse, was shocked as well.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and made a point of checking. All of the Taylor Farms bagged salads were still in their normal places. I can't believe how ignorant this whole situation is.

Sprouts still has the Taylor Farms with different names available for purchase. Is this like the war numbers and Covid numbers?

Many people live connected to their phones in a bubble of self-absorption and wishful thinking...that is, until they are directly affected. Then it's too late for them.

I ended up walking through produce without picking up anything. Everyone else that was there was getting the sale greens or organic lettuce. One thought that since it was organic, it was safe.

Wow. Consider their circles at work and in personal life are likely equivalent. Just coming off a weekend too (social gatherings, church.) Jeez.

Ответ для Renée LaScala

Certainly won’t be talked at church…the house of fairy tales.

Sadly, most Americans barely follow the news at all. It’s not just politics.

We shouldn't have to follow politics to get health information The problem is our healthcare scam here. No money for preventative care. No healthcare unless you're rich. And then we got Shitler and lost research and development also Rich people don't make money protecting us so they don't

I ran into the same thing at Sprouts. One lady knew and told another lady not to buy Taylor Farms but she said it was ok to buy Earthbound Farm. I corrected her and told them both that Earthbound was owned by Taylor.

No clue. And some are proud of it, as though politics and current events are beneath them? Goodness no, not me, i dont follow politics! Well, fine, i have no idea about this sportsball nonsense people are on about, but at least that cant give me exploding asseria.

Response I’ve gotten from some DEMOCRAT friends and relatives when discussing current events: “Steven Miller? Who is that?” “I did not know about the reflecting pool” “There’s a new Air Force one? What happened to the old one?” Just a few that I remember recently.

Ответ для Nothin’ but Blue Skies from now on

I received a vacant look when I mentioned Stephen Miller last Saturday! So many people do not read. There are millions of them, and many vote…😢

Ответ для Nothin’ but Blue Skies from now on

Well i can kinda see some dems taking a breather from reality for sanity sake. I have some friends who just really had to disconnect for a bit. Its alot for anyone paying attention. I need to take in bits in small increments to avoid swearing like a sailor.

Ответ для Nothin’ but Blue Skies from now on

i’m obviously way more informed than typical but even i don’t really know what the airforce one thing is about. i saw some mention of qatari but that’s it. there is an upper limit to how much a person can know.

And don't follow the News...or the REAL News

The produce section. A good place to Resist!

Ответ для Kristen

Right? I never thought I’d be educating (nicely, politely) some clueless people about packaged greens. 🥬

Never watch NEWS...including their local. Why do you think all the a$$holes are in DC??

Work in a grocery store as cashier. I'm the one having the most (I mean only) training in food safety because of studies background. They only did thing to pass inspections. No idea why they did it. I take every new employees and teach them. We now have a good cleaning schedule.

I served on a jury. Half the people there were apathetic towards the outcome. I can't even.

And don't vote . . .

I had a virus two years ago that caused me excessive diarrhea and discomfort and I ended up in the hospital I had to have a liver drain because I developed an abscess My stay was 124000 dollars I had insurance but was off work for thirty days If cyclospora is like my illness you don't want it

That's just frightening and angering.

It shows that Taylor farms donations to trump worked and keeps on working.

not everybody has time to catch the news ..also the agencies that would've normally been on top of this stuff have been gutted

And don’t vote

Many are exhausted! Some just have their heads in the sand! Some simply take their democracy for granted!!!

At a local Fred Meyer I was blown away by workers stocking the bagged lettuce from boxes clearly marked with "Taylor Farms". People acted as if they didn't see it or were ignorant of it. I almost blurted Taylor Farms! but didn't. I just won't buy produce at FM anymore.

Same here. I live in a red state. Although our local is just now covering it.

I consider my "lane" to be music, and I mainly stick to it, sometimes I post or repost about current events, the way I look at it is, if you want to ignore politics, fine, but that doesn't mean politics will ignore you.

As someone who specifically worked as a produce manager in the past, grocery stores chains don’t generally give staff a heads up on evolving stories. They have a system for urgently disseminating *recalls* to the store level for immediate action. If “we don’t know the source,” then it’s not news.

Ответ для RawrTigerlily

“It might be lettuce, or maybe just processed greens from a certain farm, or it could also be cilantro?” is not something that is going to result in a specific action at the store level.

Stores have sometimes put brands considered part of the recall at half off. Aren’t they supposed to pull them?

they watch fox, thats why

It's crazy that public health is considered political but that's the world conservatives want.

Ответ для Jessica Crabbit (she/her)

My rule is if the store does not have a sign announcing that they do not use Taylor Farms and who they source from, I don't buy produce there.

I don't plan on eating any commercially grown raw vegetables until the Republican Party has been driven from power and been relegated to nonentity status for at least two full election cycles. They're a threat to public health. #StupidWhiteTrash

This is the direct result of piss-poor education. For GENERATIONS very bad ppl have worked to destroy education in the US-for political (power) gain. An EDUCATED populace wldn't fall for LIES & MANIPULATIONS! An EDUCATED populace wldn't fall for 'consumerism at all costs'! It's ALL about POWER.

There’s got to be a really good—or very dark—story there.

I'm sure Faux doesn't report on it. Let them kill their own constituents.

They get their “news” from Fox, OAN, and Newsmax — they literally inhabit an alternate reality.

I think it’s more of an ignorance is bliss type situation. A recall on food is not supposed to be political and the only reason it is, in this case, is because dt is pulling strings in favor of the company that is guilty. Don’t they keep up with everyday news? 🇺🇸😪

There are a number of states that haven’t been affected yet. Nevada has several cases, but all were contracted out of state.

Yet somehow I envy them.

In my town, where everyone is a cultist, they buy the stuff because they have been told by other cultists that it is a democrat hoax. Hopefully they will clear the shelves of the contaminated stuff.

No, probably the majority have just decided to unplug from mainstream news organizations. Who can blame them? Few outlets concern themselves w/ the dispersal of information dedicated to the public's interests. Most are either light entertainment or harsh propaganda.

Or the fact that RFKjr and our media are failures! Both should have made sure notification and news went out to everyone. Instead, he lied, saying it's all under control and did nothing.

Some people were paying attention in school. Others were passed out on Xanax.

Omg…I find that a lot of uneducated Latinos from Central America the most uninformed of all.

this is how you can tell the difference between people who got a degree bc their parents paid for it and people who actually worked for it

I went yesterday to my local Giant. No Taylor Farms stocked, piles of bags of greens like romaine not being bought. This is only the beginning, the MAGAts have decimated the entire safe-guard policies for food. Read "The Jungle"-Upton Sinclair. That's where we're headed. S F M

I buy Little Leaf hydroponic lettuce and locally grown for other raw veggies at Giant.

This should have been their first clue. 😊💙

So, you're saying that orange thing bought stock in Pepto and Imodium?

And why it’s still spreading.

One day, people will understand that politics is another word for payroll.

Husband picked up dumplings from Chinese restaurant. They usually serve on a bed of lettuce - which is senseless for takeout because the hot dumplings turn lettuce into sopping wet mess. I told him to ask not to use lettuce and they were offended. They didn’t know about the whole lettuce thing

It’s everywhere like that. I am shocked by it.

That explains a lot!

Meanwhile I can't decide if my hyper-focus will save my life or get me killed.

I think knowing everything Trumpstein is doing is bad for our mental health.

…or simply hear the news or use social media. I learnt about it from S/M here in the UK!

It’s mind boggling, isn’t it? Was in a restaurant & asked the server if they were still offering salads (they are) & about the origin of the lettuce the kitchen uses-that I wasn’t interested in eating tainted lettuce. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. No idea.

I was having lunch at a local café and walking to my table saw a man eating a salad. It totally threw me off. 🙄

Private equity killed newspapers, right-wing billionaires killed TV news (local & national), Rush Limbaugh killed radio news, tech broligarchs overwhelmed online news, Trump & Musk killing PBS/NPR. Don’t blame people for not following the news. Blame greedy, unregulated capitalists.

Mainstream media is ignoring the parasite, mostly, but not social media. I guess it’s people who are not on social media at all.
